Start with basic compass work and continue to build your skills by incorporating use of  a topo map and UTM coordinates with advanced compass skills.  Then take the leap to direction finding by navigating by using the sun and other navigation stars along with using nature awareness to maintain direction while moving. Shift your thinking about “lost” by learning to say: “Camper not lost….campsite lost…camper right here.”

If  you have used a map and compass before, then you qualify. Wear hiking footwear and appropriate clothing for the Porkies in October and bring rain wear, a a plastic baseplate compass with orienting arrow and lines inside a rotating capsule, a 12 “ plastic ruler, and food, snacks and water in a day pack. The instructor is a navigation master. See his biography on our “Instructors” page.
