President’s Letter

Welcome to the Wilderness!

DSC_0051 (2)Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is one of the largest wilderness areas in the Midwest and the largest state park in Michigan.  A visit to the Porkies is one the whole family will enjoy together! A trip to this peaceful place will create memories that will last a lifetime.  This vast wilderness is bordered on one side by miles of Lake Superior shoreline and contains acres of giant hemlock, streams, lakes, waterfalls, and scenic vistas.  If you enjoy outdoor activities, how about hiking, swimming, mountain biking, camping, boating, and fishing?  Take a walk in the woods by a cool mountain stream. Stop and listen to the sounds of the forest and breathe the clean Lake Superior air.  These pleasures await you in the vast expanse of wilderness we call the Porkies.  Stop by the Visitors Center for suggestions which will enhance your stay and make your visit enjoyable.

Our park staff has its hands full with stewardship of this natural gem on Lake Superior.  This is one of the many reasons the Friends of the Porkies was founded. Our organization does its best to promote the Porkies and provide activities for you the visitor.  We have sponsored and staffed a point-to-point cross-country ski marathon; Snowburst, our local winter festival; donated money and labor to various park directed projects; highway cleanup along M107; and coordinate a Summer Solstice event each year. Currently, we sponsor the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival in August and have established a folk school, which will provide a unique learning experience for visitors to the Porkies.

The Friends of the Porkies are confident that your visit will be memorable.  If you enjoy your visit consider joining our nonprofit organization that supports Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in a variety of ways.  Your contributions are appreciated and will support our various programs and projects.
