Mini-Grant Info

Since 2010 the Friends of the Porkies has applied for and received a Keweenaw Heritage Grant from the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission.  These funds along with the matching gift from the Friends make these field trips possible for youth in our area.

2015 Mini-Grant Information

Who may apply: Individuals, schools, and non-governmental organizations desiring to create or further enhance a program or activity within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

Why apply: To support the Friends of the Porkies mission statement, which states, in part, “We are organized for charitable and educational purposes of promoting and supporting, as well as assisting in the efforts of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to offer scientific, historical, educational and related visitor services at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.”

What grant money may be used for: Grant funds cannot be used for salary, but most other expenses are acceptable.

How much is awarded: Depending on the number of applications, monetary awards may be made up to approximately $1,000.

What must be done after the event/program ends: A grant recipient must provide a final report to the Mini-Grant coordinator that includes an accounting of funds expended and outcomes achieved upon program completion. Reports may be edited and published in the Friends of the Porkies “Quill” as well as other media.

When applications are due: Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, February 27, 2015.

Criteria for awarding: The following list of criteria will be used in evaluating all proposals:

  1. Benefits youth
  2. Benefits seniors
  3. Benefits special needs people
  4. Benefits the general public
  5. Serves a scientific purpose especially as relates to geology and copper.
  6. Serves a historic purpose, especially history of copper mining
  7. Serves an educational purpose, especially regarding copper mining
