Since 2010 the Friends of the Porkies has applied for and received a Keweenaw Heritage Grant from the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission. These funds along with the matching gift from the Friends make these field trips possible for youth in our area.
2017 Mini-Grant Information
Who may apply: Individuals, schools, and non-governmental organizations desiring to create or further enhance a program or activity within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Why apply: To support the Friends of the Porkies mission, which states, in part,“…Sponsor and support interpretive and environmental education activities that contribute to a better understanding of the natural and cultural history of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park…Sponsor and/or support projects that will protect and enhance all aspects of the Park for the benefit of the users.”
What grant money may be used for: Grant funds cannot be used for salary, but most other expenses are acceptable.
How much is awarded: Depending on the number of applications, monetary awards may be made up to approximately $1,000.
What must be done after the event/program ends: A grant recipient must provide a final report to the Mini-Grant coordinator that includes an accounting of funds expended and outcomes achieved upon program completion. Reports may be edited and published in the Friends of the Porkies “Quill” as well as other media.
When applications are due: Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 10, 2017.
Criteria for awarding: The following list of criteria will be used in evaluating all proposals
- Number and diversity of local youth, seniors, and or people with special needs who benefit from the proposal
- Proposal brings participants to the park and/ or provides tangible benefits to the park
- Proposal serves an educational, scientific, geologic, or historic purpose especially regarding any aspect of story of copper.
