Our Vision and Mission
The Friends of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park was established in March 1998 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for the user’s benefit. The Friends of the Porkies represent the interests of all users of the Park. We seek to provide a platform for ideas to improve the Park. The Porcupine Mountains, located in Ontonagon County, Michigan, is the premiere wilderness region of the Midwest. We believe special management is required to protect, interpret, and promote this unique resource while creating and exploring responsible recreational opportunities for all of its users. The Friends are organized for the charitable and educational purposes of promoting, supporting, and assisting in the efforts of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to offer interpretive, scientific, historical, educational, and related visitor services at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. In order to accomplish this purpose, the corporation has the following objectives:
• Sponsor and support volunteer interpretive services and environmental education activities, seminars, lectures, and other activities that contribute to the interpretive and education programs of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
• Provide for the distribution or sale of appropriate interpretive materials, such as books, pamphlets, and photography at the Park.
• Provide financial support to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for the furtherance of its interpretive programs, facilities, and resources; and raising revenue through such methods as membership fees, donations, sales, and special events.
