Artists-in-Residence

2025 Applications will be available soon.  Applications will be due February 14th, 2025

Giving Tuesday Donations for this program:
Dan’s cabin is part of the Artist-in-Residence Program. This program brings artists from all over the U.S. to stay in Dan’s cabin in the woods of the Porkies for 2 to 3 weeks. The cabin was constructed by the Friends Folk School Volunteers in 2007. It is a place where the artists can stay and create art. As part of their stay, artists must donate a piece of art that becomes part of the AIR collection. Part of the art collection is shown at the Visitors Center. Modifications need to be made to accommodate a new compost toilet including redesigning the boardwalk. Other items will be to replace existing windows, add a window to provide more light, and replace the propane oven and stove with a more efficient and safe propane cooktop.

More Details

The Friends of the Porkies has deep roots. Local citizens interested in the land that would become the Porkies started the movement to create the park in the early 1940’s. In 1945, support by the legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold led to the creation of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Today, The Friends of the Porkies is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote, support, and enhance the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

From its beginnings as the Porcupine Mountains Ski Club, the Friends has evolved into a volunteer organization that continues to grow and take on projects at the Porkies. You can follow our progress in our newsletter, the Quill, on our website, and on our Facebook page.

The Friends of the Porkies wants to inspire appreciation of wilderness for youth and visitor experiences all year round at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
