Copper Shores has selected Friends of the Porkies as one of the non-profit organizations to contribute to. Dollar for dollar every donation, up to $200,000 will be matched. Over $200,000 a percentage of the total donation amount is given by Copper Shores and contributed to the Friends.
Your donations this year will be used to update Dan’s cabin, provide travel and per diem for Folk School instructors and provide treatment for 24 ash trees near common areas in the park.
Dan’s cabin is part of the Artist-in-Residence Program. This program brings artists from all over the U.S. to stay in Dan’s cabin in the woods of the Porkies for 2 to 3 weeks. The cabin was constructed by the Friends in 2007. It is a place where the artists can stay and create art. As part of their stay, artists must donate a piece of art that becomes part of the AIR collection. Part of the art collection is shown at the Visitors Center. Modifications need to be made to accommodate a new compost toilet including redesigning the boardwalk. Other items will be to replace existing windows, add a window to provide more light, and replace the propane oven and stove with a more efficient and safe propane cooktop.
The instructors at our folk school are essential to our program’s success. We aim to raise funds to cover their accommodations, meals, and other expenses while they come to share their skills and talents with us.
It is crucial to implement treatments for ash trees to combat the ash borer, as this invasive pest poses a significant threat to their health and survival. By addressing this issue proactively, we can help preserve these trees, maintain biodiversity, and protect the ecosystems that rely on them.
Your donations can help us to accomplish these goals. Donations will be accepted November 12th through December 3rd. The donation form can be found on their website. Box 299; Hancock, MI 49930.
